We are living in some of the most dynamic times in American history. 2008 will go down as a busy one. We have witnessed the First Black President, oil barrel go from 150 to 50 in 6 months, and now the first Asian American Baseball manager ever! Don Wakamatsu is the first Asian-American manager in major league history. He was the former Oakland bench coach and was introduced Wednesday as the Seattle Mariners’ new skipper. They say Baseball is one of America’s greatest pastimes and I’m just glad to be able to see these great strides in this country!

Well it is absolutely great that Don is the first Asian American Manager in Major League history! In Cape Town soccer, rugby and cricket are mainly played.Although we do have baseball and softball leagues here as well.I love watching and learning about baseball on ESPN…still trying to learn all the rules
I love that movie Fever Pitch about the Boston Red Sox! Makes me laugh every time
I’m glad to see the changes coming through in America I wish it was sooner though. When I look at all the movies and stuff that comes out of the states I find it very narrow in it’s represention of the people of America. F&F tokyo drift was fabulious but I think to suit hollywood it was made into some whiteboy story. I can understand the frustration Sung must feel working in the film industry having to deal with this crap. I loved your film Undoing, it was good to see a more real side of life in the states from another perspective then White. The world is full of beautiful people and I believe one’s so called background/colour whatever should define how you are judged. Personally I hate monocultures they are so distructive and limiting. Thank you Sung for being passionate and supportive to getting this lack of acknowledgment out there.
make that a “shouldn’t define how you are judged”.
It’s about time more walls are knocked down. Hollywood is somehow seeming to be one of the last. But I know that there is a new christmas movie coming out with an all Latino/Latina cast. I don’t recall the name of the film, but it was a nice change.
It seems that all minorities are starting to break down walls and it’s such a wonderful thing.:)
cool and big ups to Japan too, for this: Eri Yoshida is the first female — and the youngest — professional baseball player in an all-male league in Japan. More here if anybody is interested http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1861468,00.html
Yes, I read about Eri Yoshida. She has a wicked knuckleball.. Kudos to both!
Yatta!
Awesomeness. And to think, Asian people have often not been promoted to management roles in all fields because of stereotypes that they were too “passive” or “polite” to lead. Yeah, Wakamatsu! I rejoice in this, too.
As far as Hollywood goes, I look forward to a better future
Hope everyone in the States had a great Thanksgiving.
You and me both! It’s been wonderful! I’m absorbing every bit of it.
It go’s to show that things are changing and hope for the better. Shows that we are learning from the past more and more. Making the world better for our childern to live in
It’s time for American Asians to claim our rightful place in this country.
I’ve lived in this country almost all my life. I’ve grown up and live here, been educated here, work here, pay taxes here, am a citizen here, speak perfect English, and by God, I have a right to be called “American”!!!
That is the same way my son’s father (Honk) feels. He came to the u.s. when he was 2 years old with his fam.
He pays taxes and all that and feels he should be treated fair. Which he is right and it is wrong to treat people diff.
Y’know, it’s really not about waiting for others to define who we are. WE should be the ones who define to others who we are.
Just because others think of us as “foreign” or “different” doesn’t mean that we also have to accept their perspectives. We have to stake a claim in this country. We have to mark our territory and be willing to defend it, if need be. This is especially true for the guys out there who are reading this. Time to cowboy up guys.
you are right about that
Asian Power thats all i gotta say.
2008 has just been a wild year.
