Pre-paid Gasoline

UPDATE: Thanks to DUMBO, I’ve been informed that this company may not be a legitimate company from this article published by the LA Times (http://www.latimes.com/technology/la-fi-mygallons4-2008jul04,1,7601156.story).  They’ve received an F from the Better Business Bureau. I’m so sorry for providing you guys with bad information. I hope I didn’t give them any excess business assuming the article is true.

Here’s an interesting concept (www.mygallons.com). It’s a company that allows people to pre-purchase gas at a certain price, in anticipation that the price is going to go up. I hate the fact that a company like this can thrive, but with gas what it is right now, it only makes sense. I know everyone keeps thinking that the prices have peaked but they never seem to stop rising. They have a 30$ initial fee, but then from what it seems, (and their 100% satisfaction guarantee), you can’t really lose. Because even if the price does drop a little bit, you can always just buy gas with a normal credit card, and save those pre-paid gallons for another tank (assuming it will go back up eventually).

A few days ago gas went up to $4.15 which was about a 40 cent jump. Today it is back down to $3.99. One of my co workers was in California last summer I think it was and he said gas was over $4 a gallon.

I’m surprised this is the first I’ve heard of this. Thought someone would have come up with this sooner. Might be worth checking out…thank you Sung.

Oh, one more thing…we like many Northerners have oil heat, which is actually diesel fuel. Does anyone know if a similar service exists for heating oil? It would really help us out this winter…

if u have the mindset to do this…then why not buy oil futures?

fully hedged….

I thought somebody would have come up with this sooner. I still haven’t seen a clear explanation as to why petrol stations can change the price of fuel so flippantly. Years ago I loved the idea of having a diesel 4WD when diesel was 25c/ltr (AUS dollars). But now it’s like forget it. Hope you have a great day Sung!

It’s over 4 bucks here in Jersey, but I’ve still got to fuel up here before I go to New York. It’s still cheaper here. I like the idea of the prepaid gas card. I use a prepaid cell phone. I Like not getting a bill.

Sung, If I can borrow your blog for a second, please indulge me. Folks, with gas prices being so high, I think we should all do our part to try to live a greener life. I work as a research assistant at a company that produces solar panels. I really believe this is the way of the future. Take a minute to check out our site, Nanergy, Inc. I just want everyone to know that there are companies out there trying to help the world. Our main goal is the electrification of the third world using solar energy. We’ve already produced pumping stations in the state of Niger to provide people with clean drinking water. Thanks for letting me take a few minutes of your time. The vibe I get her on Sung’s board is one for sharing and caring for humanity as a whole, and I just wanted to put my two cents in. Thanks everyone. Enjoy your 4th of July and in the immortal words of Bill and Ted, “be excellent to each other.”

The LA Times did an article on them and apparently, they’ve been using “fine print” to get around some of their claims. Good idea, bad people: http://www.latimes.com/technology/la-fi-mygallons4-2008jul04,1,7601156.story

Yeah, from what Ive heard that comp is more beneficial to truckers, and to those using vehicles for work. Not so much for the daily commute. I feel like crying every time I go to fill up. But I do ok, since buying a new car. about 38mpg. About $40 for 10 gallon tank.

You do not complain in Italy you would pay it 2,2 dollars.

I finally filled up my Cutlass at $3.69/gallon here in beautiful Glasgow, Kentucky. That was on Saturday, i’m sure it’s down another few pennies. As long as it keeps going down, i’m cool with it. Those who are OTR drivers, hats off to them. Keep America moving!!!!! Stop the rise, welcome the decline.
