Comfort Food: Pork Sandwich

Everyone has comfort food. What is comfort food? It is that food that takes you to that childhood place where you grew up. It might be spaghetti, it might be pigs feet, it might be collard greens, it might be a special sundae, it might be a don tot, it might be kimchi, it might be a pastry….Whatever it may be we all know it when we see it and taste it. Every person, regardless of their culture, race, or background has comfort food that takes their tastebuds on a tantalizing journey. I found some comfort food the other night at The Pantry in downtown LA. In Georgia, they had these little stands that served bbq pork sandwiches. They were everywhere-just like the taco stands are everywhere. Well, my conclusion, they know how to make their bbq pork sandwiches down here. What’s your comfort food?

1) Chicken & dumplings… homemade, although Luck’s makes a good one.

2) Dove Caramel Praline Ice Cream… or vanilla with cut-up banana and magic shell…

3) Chips and Salsa with a jumbo frozen lime margarita.

I love BBQ… but I like the North Carolina BBQ…. with collards made southern style or cabbage.

Dang… now I’m hungry. =)

I’m weird with mine. It depends on what happened hehe. When I’m sad, I love Honeybuns and Doritos (oh yes, I have terrible mixtures of foods that may make some people gag!). If I’m hungry, hungry though, I crave shrimp fried rice, no veggies, an egg roll (that I gut completely and dip the outside part into my Won Ton soup!), and sweet tea. There must always be sweet tea though, so i guess that doesn’t count. I’m a southern gal after all we have to have our sweet tea;).

I also f ind hot wings from Bojangles to be sooo good when I feel like crap! I mean the ones dripping with hot, red, sauce that makes your lips burn! These two foods have specific memories for me because of my uncle and Pop Paw. I was the odd one growing up and my other sisters tended to have bonded with my other uncles, it’s like each of us have a “favorite” because we are more like one of them, and my Pop Paw means the world to me.

My uncle loves different cuisines so that’s how I had my first taste of Chinese food and it’s a special memory and bonding thing that I cherish even today! And my Pop Paw would always take me to Bojangles and get these two 10pc wing meals when I’d get into a huge argument with my grandmother (which back then happened A LOT) and I’d run crying to him and we’d load up in his truck and go into town and have wings and Sundrop!

I love Memphis sweet bbq sandwiches, so I’m going to have to try some of this Georgia bbq next time I’m down that way!

OK, Sung, I can’t help but refer your readers to “Chow Talk with Sung Kang” since it is related to this, even comfort food:

http://elena.ningin.com/2008/10/17/chow-talk-with-sung-kang-part-2/

My comfort food: pork chops, brown sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes, all mixed together, and lemon bars for dessert.

And don’t forget the doughnuts!

Comfort food? How about “Chow Talk with Sung Kang”?

Click the link above to learn more of Sung’s thougthts on food.

And Sung….those “pastries” you referred to did not come from a French bakery or a trendy cupcake shop. All hail the humble doughnut!

My comfort food? Pork chops, browned sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes. Analyze my body composition….I’m sure I’m 73% that meal :)

sorry but that photo looks yuk - comfort food, vege soup, blue cheese and hummus, hokey pokey ice cream, fresh salad, vegemite on toast, fresh fruit and veges, meat (mince) pie and tomato sauce…..

#10 Sarah on 11.12.08 at 10:52 pm

Go the vegemite on toast… but you have to be careful with its application to not be vegemited out (unfortunately so far i’ve never yet managed to convert any of my nonAussie friends to this food!) :P
Actually tho my fave comfort food is mashed potato.

“Asopao”…. it’s a chicken soup with lot’s of rice and spices. Good for the body, and most important for your soul.

1. Curry Chicken and rice. Or rotti (I probably spelled that wrong :(. My mother is from Trinidad, so of course it’s important to know where your culture and your food.

2. Ovaltine - and not the fake Ovaltine that they have at Giant Eagle, I’m talking the one with all the Chinese/Japanese writing on it.

3. Coconut buns - a new comfort of mine that I discovered 2 weeks ago. In Cleveland there is one Asain Plaza with this one bakery in particular that is so awesome. It’s out of my way, but I need to eat one or three at least once a week. :)

4. Bubble Tea - mango flavor or honeydew. This is also rare in Cleveland.

Macaroni and chees, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoe, dark chocolate (favorite)

#14 Rusheeda on 11.13.08 at 1:02 pm

How weird, I just love all foods, all foods are comfort foods, it just depend on how you eat it. Just close your eyes and let someone just feed you or you just eat with your eyes close and let the taste of your food just explode in your mouth. Mmmmmmmmmmm

Pandesal, a simple somewhat bland-flavored bread sold in the Philippines by Pan De Manila. Reminds me of the bread my grandfather used to bake for us for breakfast way back when he was still alive and we had a small bakery in our hometown. Too bad the bakery closed and we lost all of my grandpa’s recipes T_T

#16 Jessica on 11.13.08 at 6:43 pm

Southern fried chicken and home grown vegetables
or homemade Italian Lasagna or my Grandaddy’s mac and cheese yum! :)

#17 kelly on 11.13.08 at 7:35 pm

It would have to be vegetarian and preferably a warm meal. A big bowl of homemade gourmet mac & cheese is always a hit. But I make a mean faux chicken pot pie which tastes super yummy and warms my belly.

Sorry but I have to agree with an earlier poster… that sandwhich doesn’t look so yummy to this vegetarian. ;)

Rasberry zingers. The ones Hostess make. Everytime my mother and I went on fishing trips, we’d always stop on the way to get a pack to share.

My favorite comfort food is leftover cold roast sandwiches. I love to make a nice roast in the oven with only E.V.O.O., rosemary and thyme on it. I tell you the best part is how brown and crisp it is on the outside and so perfectly medium rare in the center! Makes for a great snack or comfort food.

My second favorite is ColdStone Ice Creams Coconut Cream Pie. This is an amazing thing for coconut lovers everwhere. :)

#24 catherine on 11.16.08 at 9:31 pm

Hmm my current comfort food is CHILLI chocolate. Yes you read writ. If only they could make chilli chocolate icecream at baskin robbins then I would be very happy. talking of iceream I bet they would look at me funny if I asked for wasabi icecream too. Otherwise when I was eating really bad food my mate used to make these trully evil butter ozzing toasted cheese sandwiches. He’d be arrested by the nutrition police if they knew how yummy and evil they are.

#25 Wendy on 11.17.08 at 3:30 am

Oh! How I love food. Right now I’m on a raw diet, so the only things I have been eating are veggies. Right now I could do with some turkey chili, a slice of cheese pizza with a side of fries and a tall glass of sweet tea.

Its comfort food because Ive had this combo for breakfast most of my life-and doesnt leave you feeling sick after as its not heavy or greasy.

Its the simple things that please.

#29 Niki on 11.21.08 at 8:14 am

My mom’s grilled cheese sandwiches are my comfort food. Unfortunately I can only get them once or twice a year since we live on opposite sides of the world. But I’ll tell you there is no one any where who makes a grilled cheese like my mom. It’s super crispy and golden on the outside and all melty cheese on the inside.

#30 PAULPOCK on 11.22.08 at 7:25 am
